The Beautiful Life of Hamilton's River Heart
The design serves to remind viewers of the great importance of the Waikato River landscape that is Hamilton’s Heart. The two major species of eel (Conger Verreauxi and Conger Wilsoni) present in the design were also present in the extensive swathes of riverside flora and fauna that covered this area of Hamilton in times past.
The design attempts to evoke the times immemorial when such meetings between plant and eel along the Waikato Riverbank were commonplace and one of the only measurements of time. In the busy 21st century Hamilton, I am hoping to evoke past, more relaxed times when the cityscape was absent and mostly swamp and river. I am also trying to elicit a greater appreciation for the mighty Waikato River and the ecosystem that surrounds it.
